TMCC is a comprehensive community college serving more than 11,000 students each semester in state supported programs at five college sites and more than 20 community locations. The college's impact on the community is evident through its educational programs and services. Ninety five percent of our students remain in Nevada after completing their studies, and our students, graduates, employees and infrastructure put more than $678 million into the region economy each year.
These efforts and collaboration are supported at the federal level as well. In 2009, President Obama announced The American Graduation Initiative a $12 billion initiative that will boost graduation rates and create as many as five million additional community college graduates by 2020. The president has expressed a longstanding belief that job retraining for alternative careers, a fundamental purpose of community colleges, was critical in creating long term economic stability and prosperity. Through advisory boards with members from various business sectors, Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) works to ensure our curriculum matches their needs.
In 2006, for example, TMCC began creating its energy technologies program with research from EDAWN. We also have training programs in six of the seven sectors outlined by Governor Sandoval in the state's plan for economic development. By linking curriculum directly to economic development efforts in our region, we serve the needs of the community for business expansion and increased employment.
