Rain Harvesting
Rainwater harvesting is a relatively broad term referring generally to collecting rainwater and directing it to catchment or storage areas for use. Catchments may be simple depressions in which plants are grown, cisterns, above-ground storage tanks, or rain barrels. Generally, the purpose of harvesting rainwater is to apply the water to a given need, whether it is irrigation, use for activities where water need not be potable (for example, flushing toilets), or even use as drinking water.
As water resources become more stressed, rainwater harvesting can be an important component of any water supply strategy. By collecting rain and applying it to a given purpose, we reduce the need to tap drinking water supplies. We also get a little more work out of the water before it goes on its way, as water always does.
